Why should I consider using virtual physical therapy?

Virtual Physical Therapy

There are many reasons why you should think about using virtual physical therapy (PT), and one of the most important is that you can use it from home. However, there are plenty of other reasons why you should try virtual PT.

Many Americans are willing and even eager to try virtual PT, and one 2019 medical survey reports that 66% of the U.S. consumers surveyed fell into this category. However, the survey also shows that only 8% of the people surveyed had used virtual PT. Many physical therapy practices are working hard to show patients the benefits of virtual physical therapy, and this is geared toward getting more people to try virtual PT.

Three reasons you should try virtual physical therapy

How can I get the physical therapy I need without leaving home? If you’ve ever asked yourself this question, you should seriously consider using virtual physical therapy. Here are just three of the reasons why people should give virtual PT a try:

  1. Greater availability — There are far more physical therapy clinics in urban areas than in rural areas. If you live in a rural area, then you might not have in-person physical therapy available nearby. In fact, one study found that rural areas had only 30 specialists per 100,000 people, whereas urban areas had 263 per 100,000. Virtual PT can put you in touch with a physical therapist as long as you have access to an internet connection.
  1. Lower costs — The costs of many health care services can be too high for many Americans. Fortunately, virtual PT can actually reduce the price you have to pay for physical therapy. One study reports that people who used virtual PT during joint replacement surgery rehab paid about $2,800 less on average.
  1. High patient satisfaction — Many people may be concerned that they won’t be as satisfied with virtual PT as they might be with in-person sessions; however, medical studies reveal that this isn’t the case. A study on patient satisfaction found that virtual PT had nearly the same satisfaction score as in-person physical therapy. Another study reports that patients who used virtual PT gave it a 91.2% satisfaction rating.
